Homework serves as an intellectual discipline that definitely establishes study habits, eases time constraints on the amount of curricular contents and intents that can be covered in class, and supplements and reinforces work done in school. In addition to all these, it fosters students' initiative, independence and sense of responsibility, and brings home and school closer together. It is an excellent way to teach students the importance of starting staying with and completing a task. It is also an opportunity to teach students to do the best work he or she can. It is well-accepted fact that homework is an important part of our students' education at school. Thus, we must believe that homework is truly an extension of the classroom, providing every student with the opportunity for enhanced extended learning. Homework assigned by the teachers is generally related to the curriculum and thus, due consideration is given to the developmental needs of young growing students. Thus, for better learning the required material in each curriculum area, the practice of homework is widely practical as one of the vital means.
Teachers assign the homework in almost all schools considering it as their one of the many assigned compulsory roles. But, the prime responsibility of homework belongs to the students themselves. The teachers, parents and administrators also play an important and integral role in successful homework experience. Thus, there is need to have active communication as an essential factor throughout the homework process. On the basis of this very fact, homework is truly called as home links because it is the link between home and school. Through this home links, parents have an opportunity to reinforce learning, to become involved in their child's education. From teachers' perspective homework is assigned to help students understand and review the work that has been covered in class. To see whether students understand the lesson or not? Also, assigning homework is to help students learn how to find and use more information on a taught subject. We can say that it is nothing but an extension or elaboration of class work. Teachers perceive homework as the link between school and home that shows what students are studying.
Almost all the learning theories have shown that the very fundamental thing about learning is to be willing to learn and homework provides a very good opportunity to learn. From learning perspective, teachers assign homework to students mainly to extend learning time so that already learnt things can be reinforced. Thus from the perspective of reinforcement theory of learning, homework is a powerful way to extend learning. It is an effective tool not only for promoting learning but also fostering retention. Homework takes many forms and to be effective needs to be imaginative and creative and consequently it will put tremendous responsibility on the learner and above all it will give students an extended opportunity to learn in a meaningful way. It can provide students practice in persevering and accomplishing goals and help them learn "to take responsibility for keeping their minds active".
